Dahlias are true eye-catchers in the garden and with the right care you can enjoy their beautiful flowers for months. Here are some essential tips to keep your dahlias healthy and radiant!
1. When to plant?
Dahlias can be planted after the last frost, usually from April/May. Until then, you can force them indoors to get a head start on flowering.
2. Planting depth and spacing
Plant the tubers about 5 to 10 cm deep and keep about 40 cm distance between the plants. This ensures sufficient air circulation and healthy growth.
3. The perfect location
Dahlias love the sun! Choose a sunny spot in the garden where they get plenty of sunlight. Some shade is not a problem.
4. Cut old flowers
Cut away the faded flowers regularly; it encourages the plant to continue flowering for longer. As a bonus, even more flowers will appear.
5. Keep snails away in an environmentally friendly way
Snails love young dahlias. Sprinkle crushed eggshells or coffee grounds around the plants to naturally repel them. Placing copper tape around pots also helps effectively against snails. Snails also have plenty of natural enemies, such as hedgehogs, blackbirds and chickens. Make sure you have an attractive garden for them.
6. Support
Support dahlias that can grow a bit taller and heavier by placing a stick next to them and tying them to it. This will protect them from falling over in the wind.
